เมื่อนานมาแล้ว มีนินจาอยู่สองตระกูลคือโคงะ กับอิงะ ทั้งสองตระกูลเป็นศัตรูกัน แต่ทายาททั้งสองตระกูลคือเก็นโนะสุเกะ กับโอโบโระนั้นกลับมีใจให้กันอย่างลับๆ แต่เมื่อโชกุนโตกุกาว่า อิเอยาสุ หวาดกลัวว่าพวกนินจาจะเป็นอันตรายต่อบัลลังก์ของตน จึงได้วางแผนการกำจัด โดยทำทีเป็นว่าโชกุนโตกุกาว่าต้องการเลือกทายาททางกา รเมือง โดยให้นินจาทั้งสองฝ่ายเป็นตัวตัดสิน วิธีการคือให้แต่ละตระกูลส่งนินจาที่เก่งที่สุดมาทั้ งหมด 5 คนเพื่อมาห้ำหั่นกัน โดยถ้าฝ่ายใดชนะผู้มีสิทธิ์สืบทอดบัลลังก์ของโชกุนโต กุกาว่าที่ถือหางฝ่าย ที่ชนะอยู่ได้สิทธิ์ในการขึ้นครองบัลลังก์ต่อไปในทัน ทีด้วยเหตุนี้ฝ่ายของโอ โบโระกับเก็นโนะสุเกะจึงต้องมาห้ำหั่นกันด้วยความเจ็ บปวดใจ
