หลังจากหลบหนีออกมาจากบ้านในย่านชานเมืองวิสคอนซินได ้ ในเช้าวันต่อมา เอน่า คล๊าร์ก (ซาร่าห์ พอลลีย์) ได้พบคนที่ยังมีชีวิตอยู่กลุ่มหนึ่ง ได้แก่ เคนเนธ (วิง เรมส์) เจ้าหน้าที่ตำรวจผู้อดทน, ไมเคิล (เจก เวเบอร์) เซลส์แมนขายเครื่องไฟฟ้า, อังเดร (เมคไค ไฟเฟอร์) หนุ่มเสเพลข้างถนน และภรรยาที่กำลังตั้งท้องของเขา ผู้รอดชีวิตกลุ่มนี้ พากันไปหลบซ่อนตัว อยู่ในป้อมปราการแห่งปลายศตวรรษที่ 20 นั่นก็คือห้างสรรพสินค้าย่านชานเมือง ที่ถูกทิ้งรกร้างเอาไว้

เมื่อโลกภายนอกกลายสภาพเป็นนรก ในขณะที่กองทัพซอมบี้ที่เพิ่มจำนวนขึ้นเรื่อยๆ พยายามบุกเข้ามาในห้างสรรพสินค้า ผู้รอดชีวิตกลุ่มนี้ต้องต่อสู้ทั้งกับศพเดินได้ ต้องต่อสู้กับคนในกลุ่มเดียวกัน ต้องต่อสู้กับความหวาดกลัว และความสงสัยของพวกเขาเอง เมื่อถูกปิดกั้นจากสิ่งที่เคยเป็นโลกมนุษย์ภายนอก ผู้รอดชีวิตที่ยึดห้างสรรพสินค้า ที่กลายเป็นปราการด่านสุดท้ายของมนุษยชาติ ต้องเรียนรู้ที่จะใช้ชีวิตอยู่ด้วยกัน และใช้แหล่งทรัพยากรทุกอย่างเท่าที่จะหาได้ ในการต่อสู้เพื่อเอาชีวิตรอด และที่สำคัญกว่านั้น... ก็คือเพื่อให้ตัวเองยังเป็นมนุษย์ต่อไป
