อาร์ท เจฟฟรี่ส์ (บรูซ วิลลิส) เจ้าหน้าที่ FBI หัวขบถ ต่อสู้กับเจ้าหน้าที่ส่วนกลางที่เหี้ยมโหดเพื่อปกป้อ ง ไซมอน เด็กชายวัยเก้าขวบ ผู้ถอดรหัสลับใหม่ของรัฐบาลที่ "ไม่มีทางถอดได้" สำเร็จ เขาอ่าน เมอร์คิวรี่ รหัสซับซ้อนที่สุดได้ง่ายเหมือนเด็กหัดอ่านหนังสือ ความสามารถในการถอดรหัสที่ใช้เงินนับพันล้านในการสร้ าง มีค่ามหาศาลโดยเฉพาะถ้าผู้ได้ไปคือชาติที่เป็นศัตรูก ับสหรัฐ หัวหน้าฝ่ายข้อมูล นิก คูโดรว์ (อเล็ค บอล์ดวิน) จึงตัดสินใจใช้ "มาตรการรักษาความปลอดภัย" แต่เขาคาดไม่ถึงว่า อาร์ท จะปฏิเสธงานนี้เขารู้ดีว่าหนทางรอดมีไม่มากนัก นอกจากจะใช้ความสามารถพิเศษของไซมอนออกไปให้ผู้คนได้ รับรู้
