เดวิด คือหุ่นยนต์ตัวแรกที่ถูกติดตั้งโปรแกรมมาให้รักเป็นไ ด้ถูกสร้างขึ้นมา เพราะเดวิดซึ่งมีสภาพร่างกาย ความรู้สึกที่ใกล้เคียงมนุษย์มากที่สุดเพื่อเอาใจคนท ี่ต้องการเพื่อนหรือคู่สามีภรรยาที่ยังไม่มีบุตรจากน ั้น เฮนรี่จึงไปรับเดวิดมาอยู่ที่บ้านด้วยเพราะว่าลูกชาย ของเขาซึ่งป่วยหนักจนต้องแช่แข็งไว้รอการรักษา เมื่อเดวิดเข้ามาอยู่ในบ้านทำให้โมนิกาภรรยาของเฮนรี ่นั้นไม่ค่อยพอใจเพราะโมนิกาไม่อยากได้หุ่นยนต์ จนในที่สุดเดวิดก็สามารถทำให้โมนิกายอบรับได้และได้เ ข้ามาเป็นสมาชิกในครอบครัวจนเกิดความผูกพันรักใคร่กั น และในที่สุดลูกชายของทั้งสองคนก็ฟื้นขึ้นมา เขาอิจฉาเดวิดพยายามสอนประพฤติเลวร้ายที่เลวร้ายและห าทางกลั่นแกล้ง โดยการจัดปาร์ตี้และพยายามแกล้งโดยการฝึกการป้องกันต ัวในหุ่นยนต์ด้วยของมีคม ทำให้เดวิดกลัวไปโอบกอดข้างหลังของเขา และผลัดตกน้ำไป ซึ่งลูกชายของเขาไม่สามารถว่ายน้ำได้ เฮนี่จึงลงไปช่วยลูกชายซึ่งเกือบทำให้ลูกชายเสียชีวิ ตไป และเอนรี่กับโมนิกาจึงตัดสินใจนำเดวิดไปทิ้งโดยเดวิด มีเพียง เท็ดดี้ ตุ๊กตาหมีซุปเปอร์ทอยที่เป็นทั้งเพื่อนเล่นและผู้พิท ักษ์ ทำให้เดวิดเสียใจมากเดวิดจึงตัดสินใจออกเดินทางค้นหา นางฟ้าเพื่อขอพรให้กลายเป็นคนได้ การเดินทางสู่โลกกว้างของเดวิดทำให้เดวิดได้พบหุ่นยน ต์นักรักและได้ออกเดินทางไปด้วยกัน ทำให้เดวิดเข้าใจถึงปัญหาที่แบ่งกั้นระหว่าง มนุษย์และหุ่นยนต์ รวมทั้งความโหดร้ายของโลกแห่งความจริงที่ว่ามนุษย์ได ้ย่ำยีเพื่อนผู้ต่ำต้อย ของเขาอย่างเลือดเย็น และเดวิดก็พยายามตามหาจนเจอคือที่ที่อยู่ใต้ท้องมหาส มุทรและเดวิดโดนซากใหญ่ทับเรือดำน้ำที่เดวิดขับลงไป ทำให้ไม่สามารถออกมาได้ จนเวลาผ่านไป 2000 ปี กลายเป็นยุคของมนุษย์ต่างดาวไปแล้ว
