ภาพยนตร์ได้แรงบันดาลใจมาจากบทความชื่อ "The Boys in the Bank" เขียนโดยนักเขียนชื่อ P. F. Kluge ตีพิมพ์ในนิตยสารไลฟ์ ฉบับ พ.ศ. 2515 เกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นเมื่อวันที่ 22 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2515 เมื่อชายหนุ่มชื่อ John Wojtowicz และเพื่อนคู่หูชื่อ แซล (Salvatore Naturile) ปล้นธนาคารเชสต์แมนฮัตตัน ในบรูกลิน มหานครนิวยอร์ก และจับตัวประกัน เหตุการณ์นี้เกิดขึ้นตอนบ่ายของวันที่ร้อนที่สุดในฤด ูร้อน ซึ่งมีสำนวนเรียกในภาษาอังกฤษว่า "Dog Days" หรือ "the dog days of summer" ภาพยนตร์ได้ดัดแปลงชื่อตัวเอก เป็น ซันนี (Sonny Wortzik) ซึ่งบุกเข้าปล้นธนาคาร เพื่อหาเงินไปให้แฟนหนุ่มผ่าตัดแปลงเพศเป็นผู้หญิงเต ็มตัว

ภาพยนตร์ได้รับการเสนอชื่อเข้าชิงรางวัลออสการ์และรา งวัลลูกโลกทองคำหลายรางวัล และได้รับรางวัลบทภาพยนตร์ดั้งเดิมยอดเยี่ยม....."
