แม็กซ์ (เจมี่ ฟ็อกซ์) ใช้ชีวิตดิ้นรนหาเลี้ยงปากท้อง ด้วยการขับรถแท็กซี่มานานกว่า 12 ปี ใบหน้ามากมายที่ปรากฏขึ้นที่กระจกมองหลัง ผ่านมาและผ่านไป ผู้คนและสถานที่มากมายที่เขาลืมเลือน จนกระทั่งคืนนี้ ที่เขาได้พบกับ วินเซนต์ (ทอม ครูซ) นักฆ่าตามใบสั่ง

เมื่อแก๊งค์ค้ายาเสพติดรู้ว่า พวกเขากำลังจะถูกฟ้องร้องโดยคณะลูกขุนของรัฐ จึงจัดการสืบหาตัวพยาน และส่งนักฆ่าไปฆ่าพยานปากเอกทั้งหลาย และขั้นตอนสุดท้าย ในการปิดปากพยานจะมีขึ้นในคืนนี้ เมื่อวินเซนต์เดินทางมาถึงแอลเอ... จะมีคนห้าคนต้องตาย

สถานการณ์ทำให้วินเซนต์ต้องจี้รถแท็กซี่ของแม็กซ์ ทำให้แม็กซ์ที่ไปอยู่ผิดที่ผิดเวลา และต้องกลาย เป็นตัวประกันในรถแท็กซี่ของเขาเอง ตลอดค่ำคืนนั้น วินเซนต์บังคับให้แม็กซ์ขับรถพาเขาไปหาเป้าหมายแต่ละ ราย และในขณะที่ตำรวจแอลเอ และเจ้าหน้าที่เอฟบีไอกำลังไล่ล่าเพื่อหยุดยั้งพวกเข า การมีชีวิตรอดของแม็กซ์และวินเซนต์ ทำให้พวกเขาต้องพึ่งพิงกัน ..ในแบบที่ไม่มีใครคาดคิด!!!
