ระหว่างการปฏิบัติหน้าที่ของตำรวจสืบสวนคดีฆาตกรรมอย ่าง เทอเรนซ์ แมกโดนาห์ [Nicolas Cage] และ สตีวี่ พรุท [Val Kilmer] หลังเหตุการณ์เฮอร์ริเคนคาทรินาเทอเรนซ์ได้ช่วยเหลือ ชีวิตนักโทษคนหนึ่งจนผล งานความดีของเค้าในครั้งนี้ทำให้เทอเรนซ์ได้รับการเช ิดชูเกียรติและเลื่อน ตำแหน่งเป็นร้อยโท แต่ต้องแลกกับอาการเจ็บหลังเรื้อรังไปในตอนที่เค้าเข ้าช่วยเหลือนักโทษคน นั้นจากการจมน้ำทำให้ 6 เดือนต่อมาแม้เทอเรนซ์จะเป็นหัวหน้าชุดในการสืบสวนคด ีสำคัญ ๆ ของกรมตำรวจ New Orleans แต่เพราะอาการบาดเจ็บทำให้เทอเรนซ์กลายเป็นคนติดยาวิ โคดินและเลยเถิดไปเป็น การเสพโคเคนโดยเค้ามักจะแอบลักลอบเอายาเสพติดจากหน่ว ยเก็บหลักฐานออกมา เสพอยู่เป็นประจำกับ แฟรงกี้ ดอนเนนฟิลด์ [Eva Mendes] แฟนสาวที่มีอาชีพเป็นคุณตัวในสังคมไฮโซ และมันได้ทำให้เทอเรนซ์กลายเป็นตำรวจ 2 สีที่มีด้านมืดมากมายทั้งการเสพยาจากของกลางที่จับได ้ การแบล็คเมล์ผู้ต้องหาและติดการพนันกับเกมส์อเมริกัน ฟุตบอลแบบโงหัวไม่ขึ้น

วันหนึ่งเทอเรนซ์ได้รับมอบหมายให้รับผิดชอบทำคดีฆาตก รรมครอบครัวผู้อพยพ ผิวสีชาวเซเนกัลที่มีส่วนพัวพันกับแก๊งค์ค้ายาเสพติด ของ บิ๊กเฟท [Xzibit] พ่อค้าเฮโรอีนตัวเอ้ และในระหว่างการสืบสวนเทอเรนซ์ก็ต้องพบกับปัญหารุมเร ้ามากมายที่มันได้ฉุด เค้าลงสู่ชีวิตด้านมืดอันเน่าแฟะของผู้ที่สังคมเรียก ว่าผู้ผดุงความยุติธรรม และต้องต่อสู้กับความขัดแย้งในใจของตัวเองว่าจะเลือก เส้นทางใดระหว่างการ เป็นอาชกรผู้ร้ายค้ายาหรือการทำหน้าที่เป็นตำรวจดีผู ้คุ้มครองประชาชนต่อไป !!!
