Night of the Living Dead ที่เริ่มฉากแรกด้วยนางเอกที่ชื่อ บาบรา (Judith O’Dea) ต้องเห็นพี่ชายโดนศพเดินได้ฆ่าต่อหน้าต่อตาขณะไปเยี่ ยมศพญาติที่สุสาน เธอจึงต้องเอาชีวิตรอด วิ่งไปจนถึงบ้านร้างหลังหนึ่งที่ภายในมีแต่ศพ ขณะที่เธอกำลังสิ้นหวัง ก็โชคดีที่ได้พบกับ เบน (Duane Jones) ชายผิวดำและคนอีกกลุ่มหนึ่งพากันมาหลบภัยจากพวกศพเดิ นได้ไล่กินคน แต่พวกเขาก็ต้านได้ไม่นาน เมื่อศพทั้งหลายพากันมาล้อมบ้านเพื่อรุมกินโต๊ะทุกคน ในนั้นโดยเฉพาะ
Night คือ ต้นตำนานรูปแบบซอมบี้ที่เราคุ้นกัน ซึ่งแรกเริ่มเดิมที Romero ไม่ได้ระบุว่าปีศาจในเรื่องคือ ซอมบี้ เขาเพียงหยิบเอาลักษณะของผีพันธุ์ดุทั้งหลายมารวมกัน อันได้แก่ ความกระหายหิวที่ต้องบริโภคเลือดเนื้อของสิ่งมีชีวิต อื่นมาประทังชีพ อันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของผีดูดเลือด (Vampires) ตามด้วยการที่มันเป็นศพซึ่งฟื้นจากความตาย เดินได้อย่างช้าๆ อันนี้คือสัญลักษณ์ของซอมบี้ขนานแท้ อีกทั้งยังมีลักษณะชอบเขมือบ บริโภคเหยื่อด้วยการกัดแทะ แบบที่ปีศาจเขมือบศพ (Ghouls) ชอบทำ
อันที่จริง Romero เรียกเจ้าปีศาจนี้ว่า Ghouls ด้วยซ้ำเนื่องจากเลือกไม่ถูกว่าจะเรียกเป็นซอมบี้ดีห รือเปล่า เพราะปกติซอมบี้จะไม่แทะไม่กัดกิน แต่ Ghouls ต่างหากที่มีพฤติกรรมการแทะกินศพ แต่ผู้ชมและนักวิจารณ์พากันขนานนามว่ามันคือซอมบี้ เขาก็เลยพิจารณาไอ้ตัวร้ายนี่ใหม่ จนยอมเรียกว่ามันเป็นซอมบี้ในที่สุด
เชื่อไหมครับว่าก่อนที่ Night จะกลายเป็นหนังสยองสุดคลาสสิกตลอดกาล มันเคยเกือบจะเป็นหนังตลก เพราะบทแรกเริ่มที่ Romero และ Russo ร่วมกันร่างมีชื่อว่า Monster Flick ที่มีพล็อตว่าด้วยเอเลี่ยนจากต่างดาวมายังโลก แล้วก็เจอกับวัยรุ่นหนุ่ม ทั้งสองเลยเป็นเพื่อนรักต่างมิติกัน ซึ่งตอนแรก Romero และ Russo ก็คิดว่าบทสนุกดี แต่พออ่านไปกลับรู้สึกว่ามันเกร่อๆ แปร่งๆ ยังไงก็ไม่รู้ เลยจัดการเปลี่ยนเป็นบทร่างที่สอง
บทร่างที่สองนี้ว่าด้วยเด็กหนุ่มคนหนึ่งต้องหนีตายสุ ดชีวิตจากฟาร์มของเขา เมื่อพบว่ามีมนุษย์ต่างดาวมาทำให้ศพคืนชีพ แต่จนแล้วจนรอดบทก็ไม่โดนใจคนทำอยู่ดี Romero คิดเสมอว่างานมันต้องออกมาเยี่ยมกว่านี้ เพราะนี่คืองานชิ้นแรกในชีวิตการเป็นคนทำหนัง เขาเลยอยากให้มันเป็นที่จดจำและแจ้งเกิดได้เต็มที่ที ่สุด
จนกระทั่งในปี 1967 Romero ตัดสินใจเก็บตัวเพื่อจะสร้างผลงานที่สมบูรณ์เสียที ระหว่างนั้นก็ลองคิดจนได้แรงบันดาลใจจากนิยาย I Am Legend ของ Richard Matheson (เรื่องเดียวกับที่ Will Smith แสดงนำ) ที่มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับชายคนหนึ่งผู้ต้องต่อสู้กับชาว โลกที่เหลือซึ่งติดเชื้อโรคร้ายกลายเป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตก ระหายเลือด
