ระหว่างงานเลี้ยง แกนดัล์ฟจึงเผยแผนที่เส้นทางลับในเทือกเขา
และเกลี้ยกล่อมให้บิลโบเข้าร่วมการเดินทางไปด้วยในฐา นะ

ทั้งคณะเดินทางเข้าไปในป่า ได้พบกับพวกโทรลล์ ซึ่งแกนดัล์ฟมาช่วยไว้ได้ทัน
แล้วจึงเดินทางเข้าไปในเทือกเขามิสตี้ พวกกอบลินจับตัวพวกเขาไว้ได้
แกนดัล์ฟตามมาช่วยอีกแต่ทั้งคณะก็แตกกระจายหากันไม่พ บ บิลโบหลงจากกลุ่ม
เขาเก็บแหวนวงหนึ่งได้ระหว่างทาง และได้พบกับกอลลัม
สัตว์ประหลาดรูปร่างน่าเกลียดที่อาศัยอยู่ใต้เทือกเข า
ซึ่งท้าให้เขาเล่นเกมทายปัญหามิฉะนั้นจะฆ่าเสีย
บิลโบใช้แหวนวิเศษหลบหนีออกมาได้จนมาพบพวกคนแคระอีกค รั้ง
แล้วทั้งหมดจึงเดินทางต่อเข้าไปในป่าทึบแห่งเมิร์ควู ้ดตามลำพังโดยไม่มีแกนดัล์ฟ
บิลโบได้ช่วยเหลือพวกคนแคระจากแมงมุมยักษ์ และช่วยพวกเขาหลบหนีจากคุก
ของพวกเอลฟ์ป่าได้อีก ทำให้กลายเป็นที่นิยมนับถือมาก

เมื่อเดินทางไปใกล้ภูเขาโลนลี่ ทั้งหมดเข้าไปถึงอาณาจักรมนุษย์ใกล้เลคทาวน์
ซึ่งต้องการความช่วยเหลือจากพวกคนแคระให้ปราบมังกรสม ็อก
เมื่อพวกเขาไปถึงได้พบประตูลับเข้าไปในภูเขา
บิลโบลอบเข้าไปในรังมังกรและขโมยอาร์เคนสโตนออกมาแล้ วแอบเก็บเอาไว้เอง
พร้อมกับสืบรู้จุดอ่อนของมังกร ฝ่ายมังกรเมื่อรู้ตัวก็ไปเผาเมืองเลคทาวน์
เพราะคิดว่าชาวเมืองให้ความช่วยเหลือผู้บุกรุก บิลโบให้ข้อมูลแก่บาร์ด
นักธนู ทำให้เขาสังหารมังกรลงได้

คนแคระรีบไปยึดเมืองในเทือกเขาและหาอาร์เคนสโตน
ฝ่ายเอลฟ์และมนุษย์ชาวเลคทาวน์เรียกร้องขอค่าชดเชยคว ามเสียหาย
และส่วนแบ่งในความช่วยเหลือของพวกตนโดยยกทัพมาล้อม
คนแคระปฏิเสธ และระดมพลพรรคของตนมาจากดินแดนทางเหนือ
บิลโบวางแผนยุติสงครามแย่งชิงสมบัติ จึงนำเพชรอาร์เคนสโตนไปมอบให้มนุษย์
และเอลฟ์ไว้ต่อรองกับคนแคระ ทำให้กษัตริย์เอลฟ์และบาร์ดชื่นชมเขามาก
คนแคระธอรินรู้ก็โกรธบิลโบ แต่ก็บอกว่าจะยอมให้สมบัติแลกกับเพชร

แต่แล้วแกนดัล์ฟปรากฏตัวอีกครั้งพร้อมแจ้งข่าวว่า พวกกอบลินและวอร์กกำลังยกทัพมา
ทำให้คนแคระ มนุษย์ และเอลฟ์จำต้อง รวมพลังกันเพื่อต่อสู้ จนเมื่อกองกำลังของอินทรี
และกองกำลังของบียอร์นยกมาช่วยจึงสามารถเอาชนะได้ สงครามครั้งนี้เรียกว่า
สงครามห้าทัพ ธอรินได้รับบาดเจ็บสาหัสจากการรบ
แต่เขาได้ปรับความเข้าใจกับบิลโบก่อนจะเสียชีวิต เพชรอาร์เคนสโตนถูกฝังพร้อมศพธอริน
ทรัพย์สมบัติในขุนเขาได้จัดแบ่งอย่างยุติธรรม แต่บิลโบไม่ต้องการทรัพย์สมบัติมากมายเหล่านั้น
จึงเดินทางกลับพร้อมของที่ระลึกเพียงเล็กน้อย
แต่นั่นก็มากพอจะทำให้บิลโบกลายเป็นฮอบบิทผู้ร่ำรวยใ นไชร์
