หนังเล่าถึงโลกอนาคตหลังสงครามครั้งใหญ่ อเมริกากลายเป็นแดนแร้นแค้น (ใกล้เคียงกับยุคคาวบอย) ไม่มีไฟฟ้า ไม่มีเทคโนโลยี และผู้คนเริ่มสิ้นหวัง ขณะเดียวกันก็มีกลุ่มคนที่เรียกตัวเองว่าโฮลนิสต์ นำโดยนายพลเบทเลเฮม (Will Patton) ลุกขึ้นมาทำตัวเผด็จการ ระรานหมู่บ้านต่างๆ ใครขวางก็ฆ่าทิ้ง
ตัวเอกของหนังคือ นักแสดงเร่ไร้นาม (Kevin Costner) ที่วันหนึ่งชีวิตพลิกผันหลังจากไปเจอชุดบุรุษไปรษณีย ์และถุงจดหมายในรถเก่าๆ ตอนแรกเขาก็แค่จะสวมรอยเป็นไปรษณีย์เพื่อแลกข้าวกิน แต่ไปๆ มาๆ เขากลายเป็นผู้นำความหวังมาสู่คนทั้งแผ่นดิน รวมใจคนให้กล้าลุกขึ้นมาต่อกรกับพวกโฮลนิสต์ และฟื้นฟูอเมริกากลับมาอีกครั้ง
