เรื่องราวของ Fullmetal Alchemist นั้นเล่าเรื่องราวของเอ็ดเวิร์ด และ อัลฟองเซ เอลริค สองพี่น้องตระกูลเอลริคที่สูญเสียแม่ของตนไปเพราะโรค ระบาด ทั้งสองจึงเข้าไปรับการฝึกฝนวิชาแปรธาตุ เพื่อนำวิชามาชุบชีวิตแม่ของตนเอง แต่นั่นคือสิ่งต้องห้าม เพราะไม่สามารถสร้างชีวิตขึ้นมาจากความว่างเปล่าได้ เอ็ดและอัลจึงต้องแลกร่างกายของพวกเขาเพื่อผ่านประตู แห่งสัจจะ แต่กลายเป็นว่าร่างกายของน้องชายตนได้หายไปทั้งหมด เอ็ดจึงต้องแลกแขนของตนเพื่อดึงเอาวิญญาณของน้องชายต นมาไว้ในชุดเกราะโลหิต
