The Lady ถ่ายทอดเรื่องราวชีวิตจริงของหญิงแกร่ง ออง ซาน ซูจี (มิเชล โหยว) ผู้นำการต่อต้านรัฐบาลทหารในประเทศพม่า เพื่อเรียกร้องประชาธิปไตย ในปี 1988 เธอได้ออกจากอ็อกซ์ฟอร์ดเพื่อกลับมาเยี่ยมมารดาที่ป่ วยในพม่า และต้องอยู่ที่นั่นนานหลายปี จนกระทั่งเข้าสู่การเป็นนักการเมืองขวัญใจประชาชน ที่ถูกยกย่องว่าเป็น "วีรสตรีเพื่ออิสรภาพของประเทศพม่า" ซึ่งในช่วงเวลานั้น เธอต้องพบอุปสรรคมากมาย รวมถึงการบังคับให้อยู่แต่ในบ้าน จนไม่ได้พบหน้า ดร.ไมเคิล แอริส (เดวิด ธิวลิส) สามีของเธอ แม้แต่ตอนที่เขาเสียชีวิตด้วยโรคมะเร็งในปี 1999
