ชื่อของภาพยนตร์ มาจากคำศัพท์ทางจานบินวิทยา ที่บัญญัติโดย J. Allen Hynek นักศึกษาจานบินชาวอเมริกัน ในหนังสือชื่อ The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry ตีพิมพ์ครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2515 โดยได้แบ่งระดับของการพบเห็นจานบินในระยะใกล้ (อังกฤษ: close encounter) ออกเป็นสามระดับ

โดยที่กล่าวถึงในภาพยนตร์เป็นการพบเห็นจานบินในระยะใ กล้ในประเภทที่ 3 หรือ Close Enounter of the Third kind (CE-III) หมายถึง การพบเห็นจานบินในระยะใกล้ไม่เกิน 500 ฟุต มีร่องรอยการปรากฏตัว เช่น คลื่นรบกวน คลื่นแม่เหล็กไฟฟ้า และมีการปรากฏร่างของผู้ขับขี่จานบิน
