เมื่อสงครามซามูไรสิ้นสุดลง ก่อให้เกิดซามูไรไร้นายจำนวนมาก เหลือเพียงเหล่าบ้านขุนนางใหญ่เท่านั้น
เวลาล่วงเลยผ่านไป บ้านเมืองสู่ยุคสงบ แต่เหล่าซามูไรไร้นายกลับตกอยู่ในสภาพอัตคัตแร้นแค้น
เมื่อทนสภาพนั้นไม่ได้ หลายคนเลือกที่จะทำฮาราคีรี โดยขอทำพิธีที่ลานบ้านขุนนางใหญ่
โดยจุดประสงค์นั้นคือเผื่อจะได้งานทำ หรือได้รับเงินกลับไปบ้าง
ทั้งบรรดาขุนนางใหญ่ก็รู้ดี ไม่มีใครอยากให้ใครมาทำฮาราคีรีกันอีกแล้ว จึงมักจะจบลงด้วยการให้เงิน แล้วไล่กลับบ้านไป
วันหนึ่ง ซามูไรไร้นายมาดเข้มคนหนึ่ง เดินทางมาขอทำพิธีฮาราคีรีที่ลานบ้านขุนนางใหญ่
ยืนกรานจะทำพิธีให้ได้ แม้พ่อบ้านจะเกลี้ยกล่อมอย่างไรก็ตาม
เมื่อต้องการเช่นนั้นจริงๆ จึงจัดพิธีให้ แต่เมื่อถึงเวลา ซามูไรกลับบอกว่า
"ข้ายินดีจะทำ แต่ข้ามีเงื่อนไขดังนี้....."
เงื่อนงำ และจุดประสงค์ของซามูไรคนนี้คืออะไรกันแน่
หมายเหตุ: การทำฮาราคีรีคือการคว้านท้องจากซ้ายไปขวา และอีกแผลจากบนลงล่างตัดกัน เมื่อทำได้สำเร็จแล้ว ผู้ช่วย"จึง"จะลงดาบตัดศีรษะเพื่อไม่ให้ทนทุกข์ทรมาณ
