ระหว่างการเดินทางตามลำพังในมหาสมุทรอินเดีย ชายนิรนามผู้หนึ่ง (เรดฟอร์ด) ตื่นขึ้นมาและได้พบว่าเรือยอทช์ 39 ฟุตของเขาได้ล่องลอยอยู่กลางมหาสมุทร
หลังจากประสบอุบัติเหตุชนกับเรือขนส่งตู้คอนเทนเนอร์ ด้วยความที่อุปกรณ์นำทางและวิทยุสื่อสารใช้การไม่ได้ เขาก็เลยแล่นเรือเข้าไปในเส้นทางพายุ
ที่โหมกระหน่ำอย่างไม่รู้ตัว แม้ว่าเขาจะสามารถซ่อมแซมลำเรือที่มีรูรั่ว และตัวเขาจะมีสัญชาตแบบนักเดินเรือ
และพลกำลังที่เกินอายุก็ตามแต่เขาก็แทบจะเอาชีวิตไม่ รอดจากพายุครั้งนั้น
เขาใช้เพียงเครื่องวัดมุมและแผนที่เดินเรือในการคำนว ณการเดินทางของเขา และเขาก็จำเป็นต้องอาศัยกระแสน้ำในมหาสมุทรพัดเขาล่อ งลอยเข้าสู่เส้นทางขน ส่งสินค้า
ด้วยความหวังที่จะได้อาศัยเรือที่ผ่านมา แต่ด้วยแสงแดดที่แผดเผา ปลาฉลามที่ว่ายเวียนวนและเสบียงที่ร่อยหรอลงเรื่อยๆ ไม่นานนัก
นักเดินเรือผู้มีความสามารถรอบด้านผู้นี้ก็เริ่มตระห นักถึงความตายที่รอเขาอยู่ตรงหน้า !!!
