เนื้อเรื่องย่อ
ปี 1933 นักแสดงหญิงประจำละครสลับฉาก แอนน์ ดาร์โรว์ (นาโอมี่ วัตต์ส) พบว่าตัวเธอไม่ต่างจากชาวนิวยอร์กจำนวนมากมาย ในช่วงเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำ
ผู้ปราศจากหนทางจะหาเลี้ยงชีพ แม้ไม่เต็มใจที่จะประนีประนอม และต้องปล่อยตัวเองให้จมอยู่กับงานในละครตลก แต่แอนน์มองว่าเธอมีทางเลือกที่แสนจำกัด
ขณะที่เธอต้องเดินไปตามท้องถนนของเมืองแมนฮัตตันอย่า งไร้จุดหมาย เมื่อความหิวทำให้เธอพยายามขโมยแอ๊ปเปิล จากแผงลอยของพ่อค้าขายผลไม้แต่ไม่สำเร็จ

แจ็ค ดริสคอลล์ (เอเดรียน โบรดี้) กำลังเขียนบทภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้อยู่ เพราะเงินค่าจ้างที่คาร์ล เพื่อนของเขาจ่ายเป็นค่าจ้างการผจญภัยอันเดือดพล่านค รั้งนี้ เป็นเงินรายได้เพิ่ม
จากรายได้ระดับพอประมาณของดริสคอลล์ ที่ได้จากงานละครเวทีของเขา หลังจากได้ดารานำหญิงคนใหม่ที่เขาเพิ่งค้นพบ และยังได้มือเขียนบทที่เหมือนโดนบีบให้
ต้องขึ้นเรือมาด้วย "เรือกองถ่ายที่เคลื่อนที่ได้" ของ คาร์ล เดนแฮม จึงมุ่งหน้าออกจากท่าเรือนิวยอร์ก... และมุ่งหน้าสู่จุดหมายปลายทาง ที่ไม่มีใครสักคนบนเรือจะคาดเดาได้!
