Darksiders 2 เป็นเกมส์แนว Action RPG Hack and Slash ผู้เล่นจะได้รับบทเป็นหนึ่งในสี่ Horsemen ที่มีชื่อว่า Death ความยากในเกมสามารถเลือกเล่นได้ถึง 4 ระดับ การดำเนินเนื้อเรื่องจะใช้ระบบ Quest โดยหลังจากที่ผู้เล่นทำภารกิจหรือกำจัดศัตรูได้ก็จะไ ด้รับค่าประสบการณ์ เมื่อขึ้นเลเวลก็จะสามารถปลดล็อกความสามารถต่างๆเพิ่ มเติมได้ด้วย สำหรับอาวุธและชุดเกราะใหม่ๆก็จะหาได้จากการโค่นศัตร ู รวมถึงกล่องสมบัติที่ซ่อนอยู่ตามจุดต่างๆของแผนที่ อาวุธในเกมจะมีอยู่สองประเภท ได้แก่ เคียวซึ่งเป็นอาวุธหลัก (light attack) และอาวุธอื่นๆ (heavy attack) โดยจะรวมถึงพลังเวทย์มนตร์ต่างๆด้วย
