...วันศุกร์ที่ 11 ธันวาคม แมเรี่ยน เครน (เจเน็ต ลีห์) เลขานุการสาวขโมยเงินจำนวน 40,000 ดอลลาร์สหรัฐ จากนายจ้างของเธอ โดยหนีไปจากเมืองฟีนิกซ์ รัฐแอริโซนา หวังจะไปหาแซม คู่หมั้นหนุ่มของเธอ (จอห์น เกวิน) แต่เธอขับรถหลงทางและขณะที่ฝนตก เธอได้หลงเข้าไปในโรงแรมแห่งหนึ่ง ที่ชื่อ เบตส์ โมเต๊ล ที่มีบ้านทรงโกธิคอยู่ข้างหลัง เจ้าของโรงแรมเป็นชายหนุ่มท่าทางขี้อาย ชื่อ นอร์แมน เบตส์ (แอนโธนี่ เพอร์กิ้นส์) เธอได้พักที่โรงแรมแห่งนี้ เมื่อพูดคุยกันเธอได้รู้ว่านอร์แมนมีแม่ที่สติไม่ค่อ ยดี และสร้างความอึดอัดใจให้กับนอร์แมนเสมอ ๆ เธอเสนอให้นอร์แมนพาแม่ไปที่โรงพยาบาล แต่นอร์แมนปฏิเสธ เมื่อเธอเข้าห้องพักและอาบน้ำ ความสยองขวัญก็บังเกิดขึ้น !!
