เนื้อหาโดยสรุปก็คือ ในเรือดำน้ำ Alabama ซึ่งเป็นเรือดำน้ำติดหัวรบนิวเคลียร์ได้รับภารกิจให้ ออกไปประจำในจุด ยุทธศาสตร์สำคัญเมื่อในรัสเซียเกิดเหตุการณ์กบฎ และฝ่ายกบฎยึดหัวรบนิวเคลียร์และขู่ที่จะถล่มอเมริกา ลูกเรือทุกคนกลายเป็นหมากสำคัญที่จะปกป้องแผ่นดินอเม ริกาดินแดนแห่งเสรีภาพ และพวกเขาถืออาวุธมหาประลัยที่มีอำนาจการทำลายล้างสู งที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ มนูษยชาติ

นั่นคือความกดดันแรกที่หนังสร้างขึ้น

เด็กหนุ่มทหารเรือทุกคนกลับต้องแบกชะตากรรมในการปกป้ องประเทศ ซึ่งหมายรวมถึงการปกป้องครอบครัวและคนที่รัก ทุกสิ่งที่พวกเขาจะทำลงไป ล้วนแล้วแต่มีผลต่อ "ชีวิต" ในทุกระดับความลึกของเรือดำน้ำ

แต่แล้วเมื่อเรือดำน้ำ Alabama ต้องเผชิญกับเรือดำน้ำของฝ่ายกบฎรัสเซีย ทำให้อุปกรณ์สื่อสารของเรือดำน้ำทั้งลำเสียหาย ในขณะที่คำสั่งล่าสุดที่เข้ามา ไม่ครบถ้วน และไม่แน่ใจว่าทางศูนย์บัญชาการต้องการให้ Alabama และลูกเรือทุกคนทำสิ่งใด เหลือเพียงคำสั่งสุดท้ายที่ให้เตรียมขีปนาวุธให้พร้อ มเพื่อถล่มรัสเซียก่อน ที่ฝ่ายกบฎของรัสเซียจะยิงนิวเคลียร์ใส่อเมริกา...

Washington ที่รับบทเป็นต้นเรือผู้ที่แม้จะไม่เคยผ่านสงครามแต่เ ปี่ยมไปด้วยความรอบคอบ ต้องขัดแย้งกับ Hackman ที่รับบทเป็นผู้การเรือผู้เชี่ยวกรำและมีประวัติการร บที่ทัพเรือต้องยกย่อง

ในฐานะต้นเรือคนใหม่ของ Alabama ที่มาแทนต้นเรือคนก่อนซึ่งป่วยกระทันหัน ทำให้การหา "พวก" ในเรือดำน้ำไม่ใช่เรื่องง่าย ยิ่งเมื่อต้องขัดแย้งกับกัปตันที่ได้รับการยอมรับจาก ลูกเรือทุกคนอย่างสูง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง นายทหารระดับสูงที่เคียงบ่าเคียงไหล่กันมา

Washington ต้องพยายามในทุกวิถีทาง เพื่อทำในสิ่งที่เขาเชื่อว่าถูกต้องนั่นก็คือ ต้องรับคำสั่งให้ครบถ้วน ก่อนที่จะลงมือปลดกระเดืองหัวรบนิวเคลียร์ เพราะการปล่อยขีปนาวุธออกไป อาจจะหมายถึงสงครามนิวเคลียร์ล้างโลกเลยก็ได้

หนังค่อยๆ สร้างเงื่อนไขความกดดัน ทั้งการรบ การสูญเสียไพร่พล การเผชิญกับความเสียหายของเรือจนลูกเรือทุกคนแทบเอาช ีวิตไม่รอด แต่ละเงื่อนไขยิ่งทำให้ความเข้มข้นของ "ความขัดแย้ง" ชัดเจน และสาหัสขึ้นเรื่อยๆ หนังเรื่องนี้เป็นตัวอย่างของการสร้าง "เงื่อนไขความกดดัน" ได้อย่างสมบูรณ์ รายละเอียดทุกรายละเอียดมีเพื่อเน้นให้ "ความขัดแย้ง" ซึ่งท้ายที่สุดแล้วหมายถึง "ชะตากรรมของโลกทั้งใบ" เด่นชัด และหนักหนา ก่อนจะคลีคลายในท้ายที่สุด

ผมเคยสงสัยตัวเองว่า ทำไมถึงได้ประทับใจหนังเรื่องนี้ วันนี้ผมได้รับคำตอบที่หามากว่า 16 ปีแล้ว Crimson Tide ลึก...สมชื่อ
