Hacksaw Ridge สร้างจากเรื่องจริงของแพทย์ประจำกองทัพสหรัฐฯ ในฤดูใบไม้ผลิ ปี 1945 ในตอนที่สงครามภาคพื้นแปซิฟิคกำลังเข้าสู่ช่วงสุดท้า ยที่อันตรายที่สุด และกองกำลังของอเมริกาในโอกินาวาได้เผชิญหน้ากับการส ู้รบที่ดุเดือดที่สุดเท่าที่พวกเขาเคยเห็นมา มีทหารคนหนึ่งที่โดดเด่นจากพวก เขาคือ เดสมอนด์ ที. ดอสส์ (แอนดรูว์ การ์ฟิลด์) ผู้คัดค้านโดยอ้างมโนธรรม ผู้แม้จะสาบานว่าจะไม่ฆ่าใคร ได้ทำหน้าที่แพทย์สนามที่ไร้อาวุธในกองทัพอย่างกล้าห าญ และเขาก็ได้ช่วยรักษาชีวิตเพื่อนทหารที่บาดเจ็บของเข าหลายสิบชีวิตภายใต้ห่ากระสุน โดยไม่ลั่นกระสุนแม้แต่นัดเดียว

ในฐานะหนึ่งในสมาชิกนิกายเซเวนธ์ เดย์ แอดเวนทิสต์ ผู้มีศรัทธาแน่วแน่ ดอสส์ ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในเวอร์จิเนียในตอนที่เขาอาสาเข้ารับใช้ กองทัพอเมริกา เขาไม่สนใจเรื่องการต่อสู้ แต่ ดอสส์ กลับอยากจะทำหน้าที่แพทย์สนาม ที่ไม่ต่อสู้ มันไม่ใช่แนวทางที่กองทัพคุ้นเคย แต่ ดอสส์ ก็ยืนกรานกระต่ายขาเดียว ในตอนแรก ดอสส์ ผู้มีร่างกายผอมกะหร่อง และไม่ยินยอมที่จะฝึกฝนในวันเสาร์ และไม่ยอมถือปืนด้วยซ้ำ ถูกล้อเลียนและกลั่นแกล้งจากเพื่อนร่วมรบของเขา ผู้เชื่อว่าเขาน่าจะเป็นตัวถ่วงพวกเขาในยามออกรบ ในตอนที่หน่วยของเขาถูกสั่งให้เข้าร่วมภารกิจที่แทบเ ป็นไปไม่ได้ในการเข้ายึดหน้าผามาเอดะ หรือแฮ็คซอว์ ริดจ์ ด้านบนของหน้าผาสูงชันกว่า 400 ฟุตนี้เป็นที่ตั้งของฐานปืนกลหนัก กับดักและทหารญี่ปุ่นในถ้ำที่สาบานว่าจะสู้จนตัวตาย
