เมื่อ จินซก (วอนบิน) ได้รับแจ้งจากทีมนักโบราณคดีว่า ได้ขุดพบซากศพที่ในอดีตเคยเป็นสนามรบ และเหมือนว่าซากดังกล่าวจะเป็นของพี่ชาย จินแต (แจดองกัน) ซึ่งหายสาบสูญระหว่างออกรบ เมื่อประมาณ 50 ปีก่อน สองพี่น้อง จินแต และ จินซก อาศัยอยู่ในเมืองสงบแห่งหนึ่ง จินซก หนุ่มน้อยปัญญาชนรักการอ่านหนังสือ รูปร่างบอบบาง เขาเปรียบเหมือนความหวังแห่งอนาคตของครอบครัว ส่วน จินแต ชายหนุ่มบุคลิกเข้มแข็ง ห้าวหาญ ทำงานเป็นช่างซ่อมรองเท้า เพื่อหาเงินช่วยส่งน้องชาย ให้ได้เข้าเรียนมหาวิทยาลัย ส่วนคู่หมั้นของเขา ยังชิน (ลีอุนจู) ทำกิจการร้านค้า ซึ่งมีทีท่าว่าจะไปได้ดี เมื่อสงครามเริ่มต้นขึ้น สองพี่น้องได้ถูกคัดเลือก ให้ไปเป็นทหารเข้ารบพร้อมกัน คำพูดของนายทหารคนหนึ่ง ทำให้จินแตเข้าใจว่า หนทางเดียวที่จะช่วยให้น้องชาย ได้กลับไปใช้ชีวิตสงบสุขอยู่แนวหลัง คือการอาสารบให้ได้เหรียญกล้าหาญมากที่สุด ดังนั้นเขาจึงอาสาเข้าไปปฏิบัติภารกิจเสี่ยงภัยทุกคร ั้ง อย่างไม่หวั่นเกรงความตาย แต่แล้วความรุนแรงในสนามรบ ชื่อเสียง ตลอดจนการยอมรับก็เริ่มกลายเป็นสิ่งเสพติด ระหว่างนั้นจินซกได้เฝ้ามองพฤติกรรมบ้าเลือดของพี่ชา ย ด้วยความเคลือบแคลงสงสัยว่า เขากำลังทำทุกอย่างเพื่อตัวเอง หรือเพื่อครอบครัวกันแน่ ไม่นานความเลวร้ายของสงคราม ก็ได้ผลักดันสองพี่น้องที่เคยรักใคร่กลมเกลียว ...ให้กลายเป็นศัตรู
