ในเมืองโตเกียว ริวเฮย์ (เทรุยุกิ คางาวะ) เป็นนักธุรกิจชาวญี่ปุ่นทั่วๆ ไป แต่แล้ววันหนึ่งเขากลับถูกปลดออกจากงานอย่างไม่ทันตั ้งตัว เขาตัดสินใจไม่บอกเรื่องนี้กับภรรยาของเขา เมงุมิ (เคียวโกะ โคอิซุมิ) และลูกชายทั้งสอง ทาคาชิ (ยู โคยานางิ) และ เคนจิ (อิโนวากิ ไค) ริวเฮย์ ยังคงแสร้งทำเป็นออกจากบ้านไปทำงานทุกวันเช่นเคย

ริวเฮย์ รู้สึกกดดันอย่างหนัก เมื่องานที่หาได้ตอนนี้มีแต่งานรายได้ต่ำกว่าที่เขาเ คยทำมามาก แต่ในที่สุด เขาก็จำต้องรับงานเป็นภารโรงที่ห้างสรรพสินค้าแห่งหน ึ่ง เขาต้องทำความสะอาดพื้นและล้างห้องน้ำ แม้จะเป็นงานที่ทำให้เขาอับอาย แต่ ริวเฮย์ ก็จำเป็นต้องก้มหน้ารับชะตากรรม

เคนจิ ลูกชายคนเล็กก็มีความลับของตัวเองเช่นกัน เนื่องจากพ่อไม่อนุญาตให้เขาเรียนเปียโน เขาจึงแอบไปเรียนเอง โดยนำเงินค่าอาหารกลางวันของตัวเองไปจ่ายเป็นค่าเรีย น ขณะที่พี่ชายวัยรุ่นของเขา ทาคาชิ ก้าวเข้าสู่โลกของผู้ใหญ่ ด้วยการเข้ารับราชการเป็นทหาร

เมงุมิ ผู้เป็นแม่บ้าน เฝ้ามองครอบครัวของเธอและเห็นความลับต่างๆ ค่อยๆ เผยตัวออกมา ในหัวใจของเธอเองก็เต็มไปด้วยความท้อแท้สิ้นหวัง ครอบครัว ซาซากิ จะประคับประคองกันและกันไปได้ตลอดรอดฝั่งหรือไม่
