เมลานี ปาร์เกอร์ (มิเชลล์ ไฟเฟอร์) สถาปนิกแม่ม่ายจอมเคร่งเครียด ซึ่งมีลูก คือ แซมมี่ (อเล็กซ์ ดี ลินซ์) ที่โชคชะตาลิขิตให้มาเจอะเจอกันโดยบังเอิญกับ แจ๊ก (จอร์จ คลูนี่ย์) พ่อม่ายกับลูกของเขาชื่อ แม็กกี้ วันหนึ่งเด็กทั้งคู่ถูกทิ้งให้พลาดจากการเดินทางของโ รงเรียน โดยต้องติดแหง็กอยู่กับพ่อแม่ทั้งสอง และแม้จะตั้งแง่ใส่กันในช่วงแรก แต่ภายหลังทั้ง เมลานี และ แจ๊ก ก็ต้องเชื่อมั่นในกันและกัน เพื่อร่วมมือผลัดกันดูแลเด็กๆ ระหว่างที่ต้องทำงานนั่นเอง
