เรื่องย่อ

ลี ฮอลโลเวย์ (แม็กกี้ กิลเลนฮาน) เพิ่งถูกปล่อยตัวออกมาจากโรงพยาบาลโรคจิต หลังเข้าไปรับการรักษาพฤติกรรมทำร้ายตัวเอง โดยทุกครั้งที่ตกอยู่ในภาวะตึงเครียดจนทนไม่ไหว เธอมักจะหยิบวัตถุมีคมออกมาจากกระเป๋าใบที่เธอพกติดต ัวแล้วเฉือนเนื้อบริเวณต้นขาจนกลายเป็นแผลเป็น

เพื่อป้องกันประวัติศาสตร์ซ้ำรอย ลีจึงพยายามมองหางานทำ เธอลงเรียนวิชาพิมพ์ดีดและ สมัครเข้าทำงานในตำแหน่งเลขานุการของทนายหนุ่มใหญ่ อี.เอ็ดเวิร์ด เกรย์ (เจมส์ สเปเดอร์) ผู้ตอบตกลงรับเธอเข้าทำงานในเวลาต่อมา ขณะเดียวกับที่พ่อแม่ของเธอก็พยายามแนะนำหนุ่มขี้อาย ชื่อ ปีเตอร์ (เจเรมี่ เดวี่ส์) ซึ่งเคยเป็นอดีตเพื่อร่วมชั้นสมัยเรียนมัธยมและอ่อนไ หวเปราะบางมากพอๆ กับเธอ พ่อแม่ของทั้งสองฝ่ายต่างเห็นดีงามกับการจับคู่ครั้ง นี้ถึงขนาดเร่งรัดให้พวกเขาแต่งงานกันในเร็ววัน

ทว่าความอ่อนหวานไร้ประสบการณ์ของปีเตอร์ ทำให้ ลี กระอักกระอ่วนใจ การวางอำนาจบาตรใหญ่ บุคลิกอันแข็งกระด้างและชื่นชอบความสมบูรณ์แบบของ เอ็ดเวิร์ด กลับทำให้ ลี รู้สึกเร่าร้อนอ่อนปวกเปียก เขามักจะตำหนิติเตียนเธอบ่อยครั้งว่าพิมพ์คำผิดในจดห มายธุรกิจ
