เฉิง พบว่าการเอาตัวรอดในโลกใบนี้ สิ่งที่คุณต้องมีคืออำนาจ เขาค่อย ๆ ไต่บันไดทีละขั้น จนในที่สุดปลายทศวรรษที่ 30 เฉิง ก็กลายเจ้าพ่อที่ทุกคนนำเกรงกลัวมากที่สุดในนครเซี่ย งไฮ้ แต่อำนาจนั้นก็มาพร้อมกับราคาเสมอ เมื่อ เฉิง ต้องรับมือกับกลุ่มอำนาจใหม่ที่ท้าทายเขา การรุกรานของกองทัพจักรวรรดิญี่ปุ่น และการเมืองในประเทศที่กำลังระส่ำระส่าย
