เรื่องเริ่มต้นขึ้น เมื่อโดโรธี หนีออกจากบ้านพร้อมกับโตโต้สุนัขแสนรู้ แต่เมื่อเธอได้พบกับ ศ.มาร์เวล นักพยากรณ์ผู้ยิ่งใหญ่ ซึ่งได้ดูลูกแก้ววิเศษแล้ว บอกกับโดโรธีว่า ป้าเอ็มของเธอป่วยหนัก ทำให้โดโรธีตัดสินใจกลับบ้าน แต่ระหว่างทางเกิดพายุไต้ฝุ่น โดโรธีตามหาป้าไม่เจอจึงเข้าไปหลบในบ้าน แล้วพายุไต้ฝุ่นขนาดใหญ่ ก็พัดบ้านของเธอลอยขึ้นไปอยู่ในใจกลางพายุ ส่วยโดโรธี สลบไป เพราะโดนบานหน้าต่าง หลุดมากระแทก ระหว่างที่โดโรธีสลบไปนั้น พายุไต้ฝุ่นหอบเอาบ้านของเธอไปตกลงในดินแดนมหัศจรรย์ หนังช่วงแรกนี้ถ่ายทำระบบขาวดำทั้งหมด แต่เมื่อโดโรธีฟื้นขึ้นมา แล้วเดินไปเปิดประตู หนังเปลี่ยนเป็นสีสันที่สดใส โดยโดโรธีพบว่าเธออยู่ในดินแดนที่สวยงาม เหมือนภาพวาด แต่แม้ว่าเธอจะอยู่ในดินแดนที่สวยงาม โดโรธีก็ยังคงอยากกลับบ้านไปหาป้าเอ็ม กลินด้าแม่มดที่สวยงาม ได้แนะนำให้โดโรธีเดินตามถนนอิฐสีเหลือง ไปขอความช่วยเหลือจากพ่อมดอ๊อซ ระหว่างทางเธอพบหุ่นไล่กาผู้ปราถนาจะมีสมองเหมือนคนท ั่วไป ช่างตัดไม้ดีบุกผู้ประสงค์จะมีหัวใจ และสิงโตขี้ขลาดที่ต้องการความกล้าหาญ ทั้งสี่คนได้ร่วมผจญภัย เพื่อสร้างฝันของตนให้เป็นจริง
