เปิดเรื่องโดยการเล่าถึงชีวิตของเด็กน้อยนามว่า เอ็ดเวิร์ด ลูกชายช่างทำตู้ธรรมดาคนหนึ่งที่ได้พบจอมมายากลเข้า กลที่ว่าก็สร้างความตื่นตาตื่นใจให้เขาอย่างมาก เพราะจอมมายากลคนนั้นทำให้ตนเองหายไป พร้อมต้นไม้ต้นใหญ่ตรงหน้าก็อันตรธานไปด้วย ...

เอ็ดเวิร์ดเลยสนใจในมายากล จนในที่สุดเขาก็เล่นกลได้อย่างน่าทึ่ง ระหว่างนั้นเองเขาก็มีโอกาสได้พบกับ ดัชเชส วอน เทสเซน เด็กสาวผู้สูงศักดิ์ ทั้งคู่ตกหลุมรักกันอย่างรวดเร็ว แต่แล้วก็ต้องมาจากกันอย่างรวดเร็วอีกเช่นกัน เมื่อถูกผู้ใหญ่จับได้

เอ็ดเวิร์ดจึงตัดสินใจออกจากบ้านตระเวนไปทั่วแคว้นเพ ื่อศึกษาวิชามายากล จนสิบห้าปีผ่านไป เขากลับมาในชื่อ ไอเซนไฮม์ (Edward Norton) ยอดนักมายากลที่เล่นกลได้อย่างพิสดารพันลึก อาทิสามารถทำให้เมล็ดส้มเติบใหญ่กลายเป็นต้น ใหญ่ที่เต็มไปด้วยผลส้ม โดยใช้เวลาเพียงไม่กี่นาทีเท่านั้น ชื่อเสียงของเขาเลยดังไปทั่ว จนเป็นที่สนใจของมกุฏราชกุมารเลียวโปลด์แห่งออสเตรีย (Rufus Sewell) และไอเซนไฮม์ก็ต้องพบกับความจริงว่า สาวคนรักของเขา (Jessica Biel) กำลังจะเข้าพิธีอภิเษกกับมกุฏราชกุมารรายนี้แล้ว
