ในช่วงเที่ยงของวันหนึ่ง บริเวณทะเลสาบของเมืองเล็กๆ คราคร่ำไปด้วยผู้คนที่มาพักผ่อนเป็นครอบครัว แต่บรรยากาศอันแสนรื่นรมย์นั้นกลับกลายเป็นเหตุการณ์ นองเลือด เมื่อคุณแม่ยังสาวนางหนึ่งได้ใช้มีดแทงชายแปลกหน้าอย ่างไม่ยั้งจนเขาเสียชีวิตโดยที่เธอไม่รู้ตัว

เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวไม่สามารถหาคำตอบได้ ทำให้นักสืบ Harry Ambrose (Bill Pullman) ซึ่งได้รับมอบหมายให้มาทำคดีนี้ ได้เริ่มต้นการสืบสวน และได้รับความร่วมมืออย่างดีจากหญิงสาวคนดังกล่าว Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) ทำให้เขาค้นพบปมปริศนาที่ซ่อนอยู่ในความทรงจำที่หายไ ปของเธอ รวมถึงความลับในอดีตซึ่งอาจนำไปสู่การฆาตกรรมครั้งนี ้
