เรื่องราวของบุรุษผู้ต่อมาขึ้น ครองบัลลังก์เป็นกษัตริย์จอร์จที่ 6 พระบิดาของราชินีอลิซาเบ็ธที่ 2 ภายหลังพระเชษฐาของพระองค์สละราชสมบัติ จอร์จต้องขึ้นครองราชย์แทนอย่างไม่ได้เตรียมใจนัก แต่ด้วยปัญหาอาการพูดติดอ่างซึ่งนำมาสู่ความกังวลว่า จะไม่เหมาะสมที่จะเป็น กษัตริย์ที่ดี จอร์จได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากไลโอเนล ลอจ นักบำบัดอาการบกพร่องทางการพูด จนเกิดเป็นมิตรภาพ และทำให้จอร์จเป็นกษัตริย์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่ต่อมา

ภายหลังการสิ้นพระชนม์ของกษัตริย์จอน์จที่ 5 (ไมเคิล แกมบอน) ผู้เป็นพระบิดา พร้อมกับการสละโอกาสครองราชย์บัลลังก์ของเจ้าชายเอ๊ด เวิร์ด (กาย เพียร์ซ) ส่งผลให้เบอร์ตี (โคลิน เฟริร์ธ) ผู้ มีปัญหาทางการพูด ต้องขึ้นครองราชย์แทนในนามพระเจ้าจอร์จที่ 6 แห่งอังกฤษ ด้วยเหตุที่ประเทศตกอยู่ในสถานการณ์จวนเจียนเข้าสู่ส งครามและจำเป็นต้องมี ผู้นำที่เข้มแข็ง เอลิซาเบ็ธ (เฮเลนน่า บอนแฮม คาร์เตอร์) ภรรยาของเบอร์ตี และอนาคตราชินี จึงจัดแจงให้สามีของเธอได้พบกับไลโอเนล ล็อก (เจฟฟรีย์ รัช) ผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านการรักษาโรคผิดปกติทางการพูด

จากการเริ่มต้นที่แสนลำบาก ผู้รักษาและผู้รับการรักษาต่างร่วมกันแสวงหาวิธีบำบั ดใหม่ ๆ ซึ่งก่อกำเนิดมิตรภาพอันลึกซึ้งระหว่างชายทั้งคู่ ด้วยความช่วยเหลือของล็อก รวมทั้งครอบครัว , รัฐบาล และวินสตัน เชอร์ชิลล์ (ทิโมธี สปอลล์) กษัตริย์จอร์จที่ 6 จะต้องเอาชนะอาการพูดติดอ่างให้ได้ เพื่อกล่าวปลุกปลอบพสกนิกรของพระองค์ให้ลุกขึ้นยืนหย ัดเคียงข้างประเทศชาติ ในภาวะสงคราม
