เรื่องเล่าย้อนไปสมัยสงครามกลางเมืองที่ทางฝั่งอังกฤ ษก็หมายจะควบคุมคนบน แผ่นดินอเมริกาให้ได้ แต่คนอเมริกาก็อยากมีอิสรภาพไม่ต้องขึ้นตรงกับกษัตริ ย์จึงทำให้เกิดศึกแห่ง การทวงอิสรภาพขึ้น

ตัวละครหลักมีนามว่าเบนจามิน มาร์ติน (Mel Gibson) อดีตทหารกล้าที่ตัดสินใจไม่เข้าร่วมสงคราม อันเนื่องมาจากเขาห่วงใยครอบครัวและลูกๆ ทั้ง 7 ทว่าสงครามก็ลามมาถึงหน้าบ้าน ในที่สุดเขานั่นเองที่กลายเป็นผู้นำสำคัญในการรบพุ่ง กับเหล่าทหารอังกฤษ โดยเฉพาะคู่อาฆาตอย่างนายพลทาวิงตัน (Jason Isaacs) ที่ฝากรอยแค้นสุดลึกไว้กับครอบครัวมาร์ติน
