หนังว่าด้วยเรื่องราวของ แม๊กซ์ อัจฉริยะนักคณิตศาตร์ชาวยิวคนหนึ่ง ซึ่งเชื่อมั่นว่าเขาและเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ที่ประดิษฐ ์มาเองจะไขความลับ บางอย่างได้ แม๊กซ์ใช้ความสามารถทางคำนวณของเขาวิเคาระห์และตั้งท ฤษฎีที่ว่า"ทุกๆอย่างใน โลก สามารถแทนค่าด้วยตัวเลข" และเอาแนวคิดนี้มาตีค่าตลาดหุ้นวอลสตรีตที่เขาถือว่า "เป็นสัตว์ร้ายตัวใหญ่ ที่ส่งเสียงก้องโลก - มือนับล้านๆทำงาน กลืนจิตใจคนเป็นพันล้าน"

ค่าพาย (Pi) เป็นความลึกลับที่สุดอย่างหนึ่งในแวดวงคณิตศาตร์ ค่านี้สามารถนำมาแก้ปัญหาหลายๆอย่างได้ ใช้แทนค่าสัญลักษณ์ทางโบราณคดีได้มากมาย แต่ตัวของมันเองกลับหาสูตรแทนไม่ได้ ตัวของมันเองเป็นอตรรกยะ กระทั้งไม่มีใครรู้ว่าค่านี้มีจุดสิ้นสุดหรือไม่

เขาสามารถคำนวณการขึ้นลงของราคาหุ้นได้อย่างแม่นยำ จนเป็นที่หมายปองของหลายๆองค์กร ตั้งแต่บริษัทลงทุนขนาดยักษ์ที่ต้องการให้เขาคำนวรกา รลงทุนในตลาดหุ้นไปจน ถึงองค์กรลับทางศาสนายิวที่เชื่อแม๊กซ์จะไขปัญหาที่ค ิดกันมานับพันปีได้
