ยางามิ ไลท์ นักเรียนอัจฉริยะได้เจอสมุดโน้ตเล่มหนึ่งในคืนฝนตก สมุดเล่มนั้นวิธีใช้เป็นภาษาอังกฤษเขียนไว้ว่า เดธโน้ต คือ บันทึกของยมฑูต "ลุค" ได้ทำตกไว้
วิธีใช้เดธโน้ตคือเขียนชื่อและนามสกุลของคนที่ต้องกา รฆ่า โดยผู้เขียนต้องรู้จักหน้าตาของคนๆ นั้น จะส่งผลให้คนผู้นั้นตายภายใน 40 วินาที
