หนังเล่าเรื่องราวผ่านการบอกเล่าของ Stingo (Peter MacNicol) หนุ่มน้อยชาวใต้ที่ใฝ่ฝันอยากจะเป็นนักเขียน เดินทางมาหาความสำเร็จที่นครนิวยอร์ค โดยได้มาพักอยู่ในบ้านเช่าเดียวกับ Zofia "Sophie" Zawistowski (Meryl Steep) หญิงสาวชาวโปแลนด์ที่รอดชีวิตมาจากค่ายกักกันนาซีแล้ วอพยพมาอยู่อเมริกาหลัง จากสงครามโลกครั้งที่สองสิ้นสุดลง Sophie อาศัยอยู่กับ Nathan Landau (Kevin Kline) หนุ่มชาวยิวท่าทางแปลกๆ ทั้งสามกลายเป็นเพื่อนสนิทกัน

ครึ่งแรกของหนังปูพื้นให้เราได้รู้จักตัวละครหลัก 3 คนนี้ ความเข้มข้นเริ่มที่กลางเรื่องซึ่งจะเปิดเผยความเป็น มาของ Sophie ว่าทำไมชีวิตที่ผ่านของเธอจึงมีแต่ต้อง "เลือก"

มีเกร็ดเล็กน้อยว่า ก่อนที่จะสร้างมาเป็นหนัง William Styron ผู้ประพันธ์นวนิยายเรื่องนี้อยากได้นักแสดงสาวชาวสวิ ส Ursula Andress เซ็กซิมโบลจากยุค 60 s-70 s มารับบทเป็น Sophie แต่เมื่อ Meryl Steep ได้แอบอ่านบท เธอถึงกับลงทุนแทบจะกราบอ้อนวอนผู้กำกับ Alan J.
