ในปี 2154 มนุษย์ถูกแบ่งออกเป็นสองชนชั้น ได้แก่กลุ่มคนรวยที่ใช้ชีวิตอยู่บนสถานีอวกาศที่ทันส มัย ที่เรียกว่า "เอลลิเซี่ยม" และคนที่เหลือใช้ชีวิตอยู่บนโลกที่มีประชากรหนาแน่นแ ละเสื่อมโทรม ผู้คนบนโลกใฝ่ฝันที่จะหนีจากอาชญากรรมและความยากจนที ่ครอบงำไปทั่วทุกระแหง ชายคนเดียวที่มีโอกาสจะนำความเสมอภาคมาสู่โลกนี้ได้ค ือ "แม็กซ์" (แมทท์ เดมอน) เด็กหนุ่มธรรมดาที่ต้องการจะไปเอลลิเซี่ยมให้ได้ เมื่อชีวิตเขาตกอยู่ในอันตราย เขาก็จำยอมต้องรับภารกิจสุดโหดที่ทำให้เขาต้องอยู่ฝั ่งตรงข้ามกับ"เดลาคูร์" (โจดี้ ฟอสเตอร์) ผู้ดูแลเอลลิเซี่ยมและกองกำลังอันตรายของเธอ แต่ถ้าเขาทำสำเร็จ ไม่เพียงแต่เขาจะรักษาชีวิตของตัวเองไว้ได้ เขายังจะสามารถช่วยชีวิตผู้คนบนโลกหลายล้านคนได้ด้วย เช่นกัน
