Red Tails ได้แรงบันดาลใจจากเหตุกาณ์จริงของฝูงบินทัสคีจี เสืออากาศผิวสีรุ่นแรกแห่งกองทัพอากาศสหรัฐ ซึ่งแม้จะผ่านการฝึกฝนอย่างสมบูรณ์เช่นเดียวกับทหารผ ิวขาว แต่ก็ยังถูกปฏิเสธเพราะกำแพงกั้นทางผิวสี จนในที่สุดก็ได้แสดงวีรกรรมหาญกล้าให้เป็นที่ประจักษ ์ในสมรภูมิของสงครามโลก ครั้งที่สอง อันเป็นเรื่องราวที่จอร์จ ลูคัส ประทับใจและอยากนำมาเสนอ โดยได้ แอนโธนี เฮมมิงเวย์ ผู้กำกับจากซีรี่ส์ชุด CSI: NY มาทำหน้าที่กุมบังเหียนให้

แม้เรื่องราวของฝูงบินทัสคีจีจะเคยถูกสร้างเป็นภาพยน ตร์ฉบับฉายทางทีวีของเอ ชบีโอมาแล้ว แต่ก็ปฏิเสธไม่ได้ว่า Red Tails มีฉากรบกลางเวหาที่อลังการ แปลกใหม่ ดูน่าตื่นตาตื่นใจ และยิ่งใหญ่สมกับเป็นผลงานของลูคัส
