ไคล์ด เชลตัน (เจอราร์ด บัตเลอร์) เป็นผู้ชายที่รักครอบครัวคนหนึ่ง ที่ลูกเมียถูกฆาตกรรมระหว่างการถูกปล้นบ้าน เมื่อฆาตกรทั้งสองถูกจับ นิค ไรซ์ (เจมี่ ฟ็อกซ์) อัยการเขตหนุ่มไฟแรงได้รับมอบหมายให้จัดการกับคดีนี้ นิค ได้เสนอให้ผู้ต้องหาคนหนึ่งได้รับโทษสถานเบา เพื่อแลกเปลี่ยนกับการให้การปรักปรำเพื่อนผู้ร่วมสมค บคิด เวลาเลยผ่านไปสิบปี ผู้ต้องหาที่หลุดรอดไปจากการโทษฆาตกรรมถูกสังหารอย่า งโหดเหี้ยม ซึ่ง ไคล์ด ก็สารภาพและยอมมอบตัวแต่โดยดี แต่ภายหลังเขาก็ได้เอ่ยปากเตือน นิค ว่าให้เขาแก้ไขระบบกฏหมาย ที่ทำให้ครอบครัวของเขาต้องพบกับความตาย ไม่เช่นนั้นทุกคนที่เกี่ยวข้องจะต้องชดใช้ในไม่ช้า ไคล์ด ก็ได้ทำตามคำเตือน ด้วยแผนการลอบสังหารอันน่าทึ่งและอันตราย จากการชักใยอยู่หลังลูกกรงเหล็กที่ไม่สามารถคาดเดาหร ือป้องกันได้ เมืองฟิลาเดลเฟียต้องตกอยู่ในภาวะวิกฤต เมื่อเป้าหมายผู้มีอำนาจในเมืองถูกสังหารไปทีละคน โดยที่ทางการไม่สามารถยับยั้งความโกลาหลนี้ได้มีเพีย ง นิค เท่านั้นที่จะหยุดเรื่องนี้ได้ และเพื่อที่จะทำมันเขาต้องพยายามเอาชนะอัจฉริยะอย่าง ไคล์ด ที่ความพลาดพลั้งเพียงนิดเดียวก็อาจหมายถึงความตาย และเมื่อครอบครัวของ นิค ตกอยู่ในอุ้งมือของ ไคล์ด เขาก็ยิ่งต้องดิ้นรนในการแก้ไขปริศนาจากคู่ต่อกร ที่มักเดินนำหน้าเขาอยู่หนึ่งก้าวเสมอ
