เรื่องราวเกิดขึ้นในยุคก่อนที่จะมีการเลิกทาสในโรมัน ราว 200 ปี เป็นยุคที่โรมันเฟื่องฟู ยุคนั้นพวกทาสต้องทำงานหนัก อดอยาก ถูกเฆี่ยนโบยหากไม่เชื่อฟัง และถูกขายต่อไปให้กับใครก็ได้หากราคาเป็นที่พึงพอใจ ผู้ชาย ใช้แรงงาน ผู้หญิงทำงานทุกอย่างที่ได้รับคำสั่ง และเมื่อมีลูก ลูกก็จะเป็นทาส และถูกขายออกไปเมื่อโตพอจะทำงานได้แล้ว ดังนั้นเมื่อเกิดมาเป็นทาส ก็หมายความว่าจะต้องเป็นทาสตลอดชีวิต และเป็นทาสตลอดชั่วลูกชั่วหลาน สืบเช่นนี้ไปไม่มีสิ้น
