"....The Shining เล่าถึงเรื่องราวของครอบครัวทอร์เรนซ์ ที่ประกอบไปด้วย แจ๊ค นักเขียนผู้เคยติดเหล้าและมีประวัติทำร้ายลูกตัวเอง, เวนดี้ ภรรยาที่อ่อนโยน และ แดนนี่ ลูกชายที่มีสัมผัสพิเศษถึงสิ่งเหนือธรรมชาติ

แจ๊คเองพยายามจะแก้ตัวด้วยการหางานทำ พร้อมทั้งใช้เวลาอยู่กับลูกเมียเพื่อกระชับความสัมพั นธ์ ลบล้างอดีตอันเลวร้ายออกไปเสีย เขาเลยรับงานเฝ้าโรงแรมโอเวอร์ลุค ซึ่งจะปิดบริการทุกฤดูหนาว เนื่องจากจะมีหิมะหนามากจนไม่สามารถเดินทางเข้าออกได ้

ในตอนแรกทุกอย่างเหมือนจะเป็นไปด้วยดีครับ จนกระทั่งวิญญาณสยองที่สิงในโรงแรมเริ่มปั่นหัวแจ๊คใ ห้บ้าคลั่ง และพวกมันยังต้องการตัวแดนนี่เอาไว้อีกด้วย ทำให้ครอบครัวทอร์เรนซ์ต้องหาทางเอาตัวรอดจากโรงแรมผ ีนรกแห่งนี้

แทบไม่ต้องพูดถึงล่ะครับว่าความสำเร็จของ The Shining เยอะขนาดไหน เอาเป็นว่าขายดีติดอันดับเบสต์เซลเลอร์ซ้ำยังเป็นนิย ายปกแข็งเล่มแรกในชีวิต ของ King อีกต่างหาก คำชมก็ท่วมท้นคนอ่านพากันขนพองสยองเกล้ากับเหตุการณ์ สุดสยอง

ถ้า Jaws เป็นหนังที่ทำให้คนไม่กล้าลงน้ำแล้ว The Shining คือนิยายที่ทำเอาคนกลัวการไปพักตามโรงแรมกันเป็นแถบๆ เพราะ King ร่ายและเล่าให้สมจริง จนนักอ่านหลายคนออกมาบ่นว่าออกจะสมจริงเกินไป น่ากลัวเกินเหตุเหมือนเรื่องมันมาเกิดตรงหน้าพวกเขา!

สองปีต่อมาหลังจากหนังสือไต่อันดับขายดี ตามด้วยการที่นิยายก่อนหน้าของ King ทั้ง Carrie และ Salem s Lot ต่างทำออกมาเป็นหนังได้รับคำชมและเงินทองไปพอตัว งานชิ้นนี้เลยโดนติดต่อขอซื้อไปทำหนังอย่างรวดเร็ว และการวางตัวผู้กำกับก็เล่นเอาฮือฮาทั้งวงการ เพราะเขาคือ Stanley Kubrick เจ้าของงานดังๆ ระดับคลาสสิก ไม่ว่าจะ Spartacus, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey และ A Clockwork Orange ทำเอาทั้งคนดูและคนทำจับตามองว่าเมื่อยอดนักเขียนมาเ จอกับยอดนักทำหนัง อะไรจะเกิดขึ้น...."
