Divergent สร้างจากวรรณกรรมเยาวชนขายดีของ เวโรนิก้า รอทห์ (Veronica Roth) ว่าด้วยเรื่องราวของ สังคมอันเสื่อมทรามชิคาโก้ถูกแบ่งออกเป็น 5 ส่วน ซึ่งได้แก่ Candor กลุ่มคนที่ยึดถือในความจริง Abnegation กลุ่มที่ยึดมั่นในการเสียสละตนเอง, Dauntless กลุ่มคนที่ยึดมั่นในความหาญกล้า, Amity กลุ่มคนที่ยึดถือในความสมานฉันท์ และ Erudite กลุ่มคนที่ยึดถือในความรู้และสติปัญญา โดยในทุก ๆ ปีจะมีวันที่กำหนดให้ เด็กอายุ 16 ปีทุกคนเลือกว่าตัวเองจะไปอยู่ในส่วนไหน ซึ่งหลังจากเลือกแล้วก็จะต้องอยู่กับการตัดสินใจของต ัวเองตลอดไป และสำหรับ บีทริซ (Beatrice) สิ่งที่เธอต้องการ คือการอยู่ร่วมกับครอบครัว รวมทั้งเป็นตัวเองในสิ่งที่เธอฝันมาตลอด ซึ่งเธอจำเป็นต้องเลือกระหว่างสิ่งใดสิ่งหนึ่ง ทำให้เธอตัดสินใจทำในสิ่งที่คนไม่คาดคิด แม้กระทั่งตัวเธอเองระหว่างการเริ่มต้นที่เต็มไปด้วย การแข่งขันนี้ บีทริซ (Beatrice) ตัดสินใจเปลี่ยนชื่อตัวเองเป็น ทริส (Tris) และร่วมเดินทางไปกับเพื่อน ๆ ที่ต้องเดินทางตามการตัดสินใจของตัวเองไปด้วยเหมือนก ัน ซึ่งมีการทดสอบสุดหินทั้งทางร่างกายและจิตใจผ่านโปรแ กรมจำลองภาพ ที่บางอันก็ส่งผลกระทบมาถึงชีวิตจริงด้วย ในเวลานี้เองที่ทริสต้องมองให้ออกว่าใครกันแน่คือเพื ่อนแท้ รวมทั้งความสัมพันธ์กับชายหนุ่มที่ก่อตัวขึ้น จะไปในทางเดียวกับทางเดินชีวิตที่เธอตัดสินใจเอาไว้ไ ด้หรือเปล่าอย่างไรก็ดี ทริสยังคงมีความลับบางอย่างซ่อนอยู่ ความลับที่เธอไม่อาจบอกใคร เพราะถูกเตือนเอาไว้ว่าการเปิดเผยมันอาจหมายถึงความต าย เมื่อเผชิญกับความกดดันและอุปสรรคมากมาย ทริสได้เรียนรู้ว่าความลับของเธอมีความสำคัญมากพอจะช ่วยเหลือคนที่รักได้ แต่มันอาจมาพร้อมกับความพินาศของเธอด้วย
