เนื้อเรื่องของภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้ ได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากหนังสือชื่อ “Three Comrades” (1937) ของเอริค มาเรีย เรอมาร์ก ผู้แต่งเรื่องแนวรบด้านตะวันตก เหตุการณ์ไม่เปลี่ยนแปลง ซึ่งมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับทหารผ่านศึกชาวเยอรมัน 3 คน ภายหลังสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่ง โดยดัดแปลงเนื้อเรื่องให้เกี่ยวกับทหารอเมริกันในสงค รามเวียดนาม

เดอะ เดียร์ฮันเตอร์ (The Deer Hunter) ออกฉายในปี 1978 เป็นภาพยนตร์ดรามา มีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับความสัมพันธ์เด็กมูฟวี่ของชาวอเมร ิกันเชื้อสายรัสเซีย อดีตคนงานโรงงานถลุงเหล็ก ที่เข้าร่วมรบในสงครามเวียดนาม และกล่าวถึงอิทธิพลจากความรุนแรงของสงคราม ที่มีผลกระทบต่อสภาพจิตใจของอดีตทหารผ่านศึก
ฉากที่มีชื่อเสียงและทำให้ภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้เป็นที่ร ู้จักและถูกบันทึกเอาไว้ในหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ คือฉากการเล่น Russian roulette ซึ่งทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตจากการเลียนแบบฉากในภาพยนตร์ หลายราย ในหลายประเทศทั่วโลก รวมทั้งประเทศไทยด้วย
