เรื่องย่อ
เกรซ (นิโคล คิดแมน) เป็นแม่ที่เข้มงวดและเคร่งครัดมากกับลูกๆ และทุกอย่างภายในบ้าน แต่ตัวเธอเองไม่ได้ติดต่อกับโลกภายนอกมานานแล้ว แม้จะออกไปแต่ก็ไม่ได้เพราะหมอกลงจัด ต่อมาไม่นาน ได้เกิดเรื่องประหลาดขึ้นภายในบ้าน เช่น เปียโนบรรเลงโดยไม่มีคนเล่น ประตูหรือผ้าม่านเปิดปิดได้เอง มีเสียงคนแปลกๆ บนชั้นบนของบ้าน หรือแม้แต่แอนน์ (อลิคิน่า มานน์) และนิโคลัส (เจมส์ เบนท์ลี่ย์) อ้างว่า เห็นคนอื่นปรากฏตัวในบ้านด้วย เกรซพยายามที่จะไม่เชื่อและคาดคั้นเอากับคนรับใช้ทั้ ง 3 ที่เพิ่งมาสมัครงานใหม่ เพราะเธอเพิ่งนึกได้ว่าที่แท้แล้วเธอไม่ได้ลงประกาศใ ดๆ ในหนังสือพิมพ์ แต่หนึ่งในนั้น (ฟิออนนูล่า ฟลานาแกน) กลับไม่รู้สึกรู้สาอะไรและบอกว่า พวกตนเคยมาทำงานที่นี่ครั้งหนึ่งเมื่อนานมาแล้ว ก่อนที่เกรซและลูกๆ จะรู้ความจริงที่น่าหวาดผวาจากคนรับใช้เหล่านี้
