เรื่องราวของการค้นหาเรือดำน้ำนิวเคลียร์ของกองทัพเร ือสหรัฐฯ มอนทาน่า ที่เกิดเหตุอับปางลงไปในหุบเหวลึกในมหาสมุทร หลังจากที่เกิดการชนเข้ากับ วัตถุใต้น้ำไร้สัญชาติ ซึ่งหลังจากนั้นทั้งฝ่ายของรัสเซียและสหรัฐฯ ต่างก็ต้องการเข้าไปมีส่วนในการเก็บกู้เรือดำน้ำลำนี ้ และทางอเมริกันก็ได้ตัดสินใจที่จะให้หน่วยรบพิเศษ SEALS เข้าไปทำภารกิจนี้ด้วยตัวเอง โดยใช้แท่นขุดเจาะน้ำมันใต้ทะเลต้นแบบของบริษัทเอกชน รายหนึ่งที่มีชื่อเรียกว่า ดีพ คอร์ เป็นฐานการปฏิบัติการกู้ภัยในครั้งนี้ และได้ขอให้ทางลูกเรือของแท่นขุดเจาะซึ่งประกอบด้วย เวอร์จิล บั๊ด บริกก์แมน (เอ็ด แฮร์ริส) ซึ่งเป็นหัวหน้าแท่นขุดเจาะฯ และอดีตภรรยาของบั๊ดที่ห่างเหินกันไปนานอย่างลินด์ซี ่ บริกก์แมน (แมรี่ อลิซาเบธ มาสทรานโทนิโอ) ผู้ซึ่งเป็นคนออกแบบแท่นขุดเจาะนี้มาร่วมทำงานด้วย
