เมื่อวันที่ 4 พฤศจิกายน 1979 เกิดการปฏิวัติของชาวอิหร่านขั้นรุนแรง กองกำลังได้จู่โจมสถานทูตสหรัฐฯ ในกรุงเตห์ราน มีการจับชาวอเมริกัน 52 คนเป็นตัวประกัน ท่ามกลางความโกลาหลชาวอเมริกัน 6 คนวางแผนหลบหนีและหาที่ลี้ภัยในบ้านของเอกอัครราชทูต ชาวแคนาดา ในช่วงพริบตาก่อนที่ทั้ง 6 คนจะถูกพบตัวในสภาพใกล้ตาย โทนี่ เม็นเดส (แอ็ฟเฟล็ค) ซีไอเอที่ได้รับฉายาพิเศษว่า “จอมสกัด” เข้ามาพร้อมแผนการร้ายเสี่ยงภัย เพื่อพาพวกเขาหลบหนีออกนอกประเทศอย่างปลอดภัย ซึ่งแผนการที่น่าทึ่งนี้เป็นแผนการที่เกิดขึ้นในภาพย นตร์ได้เท่านั้น
