....ภาพยนตร์ Badlands เป็นผลงานกำกับเรื่องแรกของผู้กำกับสันโดษชาวอเมริกั นนาม เทอเรนซ์ มาลิค ซึ่งหากนับจนถึงปัจจุบันเขาทำผลงานไปทั้งสิ้น 5 เรื่องเท่านั้นภายใต้ระยะเวลา 38 ปี (เฉลี่ย 7 ปีกว่าต่อเรื่อง) ทำให้เชื่อได้ว่าผลงานของเขาที่ผลิตออกมาแต่ละเรื่อง นั้น ถูกจัดให้เป็นมาสเตอร์พีชอย่างไม่ต้องสงสัย ทั้ง Days of Heaven (1978) ,The Thin Red Line (1998), The New World (2005) และ The Tree of Life (2011)

โดย Badlands ถูกดัดแปลงมาจากเรื่องจริงของมือปืนฆาตกร Charles Starkweather และ แฟนสาววัย 14 ปี Caril Ann Fugate ที่ฆ่าคนเกือบครึ่งโหล ก่อนที่ฝ่ายชายจะถูกจับและถูกประหารชีวิตด้วยเก้าอี้ ไฟฟ้า ส่วนฝ่ายหญิงติดคุก 18 ปี ก่อนที่จะถูกปล่อยตัว

แต่เมื่อมันมาอยู่ในมือของ มาลิค แล้ว เรื่องราวคู่รักวัยหนุ่มสาวทั้งสองจึงไม่ธรรมดา แต่โลกของพวกเขา ด้วยวิธีคิดบุคลิกท่าทาง มูลเหตุการกระทำ ถูกวิเคราะห์และตีความจากนักวิจารณ์และนักดูหนังต่าง ๆนานา และภาพยนตร์เรื่องนี้เองได้ทำให้ชื่อเสียงของ เทอเรนซ์ มาลิค ขจรขจายไปไกล รวมทั้งตัวภาพยนตร์เองถูกจัดให้อยู่ใน 1,001 ภาพยนตร์ที่ต้องดูก่อนตายอีกด้วย.....

แต่ถึงอย่างไรนั้นผู้เขียนก็ยังเชื่อว่า คนรักหนุ่มสาวทั้งสอง ออกเดินทางทิ้งสังคมไว้ด้านหลัง และขับรถไปยังทุ่งร้างกลางป่าเขาลำนาไพร แม้ใครจะบอกเขาเป็นขบถสังคม แต่หารู้ไม่ว่า เขาเพียงกำลังค้นหาอัตลักษณ์ของพวกเขาเท่านั้นเอง และมาลิคก็เช่นกัน ผลงานชิ้นแรกของเขา เขากำลังออกค้นหาความหมาย การดำเนินชีวิตในแบบอเมริกันดรีม ทั้งๆที่เขารู้อยู่เต็มอกว่าเขาคงไม่มีทางชีวิตเช่นน ั้นได้อย่างแน่นอน ...."
