Tokyo Ghoul ถูกจากมาจากมังงะแนวสยองขวัญ ดาร์กแฟนตาซี จากผู้แต่ง Ishida Sui ซึ่งลงประจำที่นิตยสาร Weekly Young Jump ซึ่งสำหรับเรื่องนี้ฉบับมังงะยังไม่จบ ทำให้ตัวอนิเมะมีข่าวว่าจะทำเนื้อเรื่องฉายถึงตอนจบเ ล่ม 8 เท่านั้นซึ่งอาจจะมีจำนวนตอนทั้งหมด 24 ตอน
