In 2026, a new machine called the Augma is developed to compete against the NerveGear and its successor, the Amusphere. A next-gen wearable device, the Augma doesn't have a full-dive function like its predecessors. Instead, it uses Augmented Reality (AR) to get players into the game. It is safe, user-friendly and lets users play while they are conscious, making it an instant hit on the market. The most popular game on the system is "Ordinal Scale" (aka: OS), an ARMMORPG developed exclusively for the Augma. Asuna and the gang have already been playing OS for a while, and soon Kirito decides to join them. However, they're about to find out that Ordinal Scale isn't all fun and games.

เรื่องย่อ

ปี 2022 วิทยาการโลกเสมือนจริงได้พัฒนาก้าวหน้าไปสุดกู่จากกา รมาของอุปกรณ์ NerveGear ซึ่งสร้างโดย Akihiko Kayaba ซึ่งอุปกรณ์นี้จะทำให้ผู้ใช้เข้าถึงโลกเสมือนจริงได้ แบบเต็มขั้น และด้วยอุปกรณ์ชิ้นนี้ ทำให้เกิดเกมแนว VRMMORPG (Virtual Reality Mass Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) ขึ้น

ต่อมาในปี 2026 อุปกรณ์ชิ้นใหม่ที่ชื่อ Augma ก็ถูกสร้างขึ้นเพื่อตีตลาด NerveGear แถมยังออกอุปกรณ์รุ่นใหม่ที่ชื่อ Amusphere ตามมาด้วย โดยอุปกรณ์ล้ำสมัยนี้ไม่ได้มีระบบการเข้าถึงโลกเสมือ นจริงแบบเต็มขั้น แต่มันใช้ระบบ Augmented Reality (AR) ในการนำผู้เล่นเข้าไปในโลกแห่งเกมแทน ซึ่งมีความปลอดภัย และสะดวกต่อผู้ใช้ได้ง่ายกว่า จึงเป็นที่นิยมเป็นอย่างมาก ซึ่งเกมที่มีชื่อเสียงที่สุดในตอนนี้ก็คงหนีไม่พ้น “Ordinal Scale” ซึ่งเป็นเกมแนว ARMMORPG ที่สร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อเล่นกับ Augma โดยเฉพาะ

อาสึนะ และเพื่อนๆ ของเธอได้เข้าไปเล่นในเกม Ordinal Scale มาสักพักนึงแล้ว ก่อนที่ คิริโตะ จะตัดสินใจตามเข้าไปเล่นด้วย
