ภาพยนตร์เดินเรื่องใน "กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว ณ กาแลกซี อันไกลแสนไกล" เล่าเรื่องของนักต่อสู้เพื่ออิสรภาพเรียกตัวเองว่า "พันธมิตรกบฏ" ที่วางแผนทำลายสถานีอวกาศดาวมรณะที่ทรงพลัง ซึ่งสร้างโดยจักรวรรดิกาแลกติกที่ชั่วร้าย ทำให้ชีวิตของเด็กหนุ่มชาวไร่ ลุค สกายวอล์คเกอร์ เปลี่ยนแปลงไปตลอดกาล เมื่อเขาบังเอิญได้เป็นเจ้าของหุ่นยนต์สองตนที่เก็บข ้อมูลแผนผังดาวมรณะเอา ไว้ เมื่อจักรวรรดิออกตามหาหุ่นยนต์ทั้งสองตนอย่างโหดร้า ย ลุคจึงตัดสินใจออกเดินทางร่วมกับอาจารย์เจไดโอบีวัน เคโนบี เพื่อไปช่วยเหลือเจ้าของของหุ่นยนต์ทั้งสองคือเจ้าหญ ิงเลอาและช่วยกอบกู้กา แลกซีเอาไว้
