แซม [Christian Bale] นักเรียนแพทย์หนุ่มไฟแรงจากฮาวาร์ดผู้คาดหวังกับชีวิ ตที่สมบูรณ์แบบวางแผนแต่งงานกับ อเล็กซ์ [Kate Beckinsale] คู่หมั้นสาวที่คบหาดูใจกันมานานแต่เพราะเหตุผลบางประ การทำให้แซมต้องเดินทางมาฝึกงานที่โรงพยาบาลจิตเวชปร ะจำเมือง Laurel Canyon ลอสแอนเจลิสพร้อมกันกับที่อเล็กซ์ต้องทำวิทยานิพนธ์ร ะดับปริญญาโทที่เธอกำลังศึกษาอยู่และทำให้ทั้งสองต้อ งเดินทางมาพักอาศัยอยู่กับ เจน [Frances McDormand] แม่ของแซมที่เป็นโปรดิวเซอร์หญิงที่ประสบความสำเร็จอ ย่างสูงของวงการเพลงร๊อคแต่เพราะนิสัยรักอิสระเสรีไม ่แคร์สังคมรอบข้างและหลังจากประสบความล้มเหลวในชีวิต ครอบครัวเธอก็ปล่อยเนื้อปล่อยตัวและเปลี่ยนคู่นอนมาก มายหลายคนทำให้เธอมีความสัมพันธ์ที่ไม่ลงรอยกับลูกชา ยอย่างแซมที่รู้สึกอับอายกับนิสัยแม่ตนเองเสมอมา

การมาอาศัยอยู่ที่ Laurel Canyon ทำให้ความสัมพันธ์ของคู่รักที่กำลังวางแผนแต่งงานกัน ต้องเริ่มมีปัญหาเมื่อมีมือที่สามเข้ามาแทรกอย่าง เอียน [Alessandro Nivola] นักร้องหนุ่มมาดเซอร์ที่กำลังทำงานร่วมกับเจนที่ดูจะ ให้ความสนใจในตัวของอเล็กซ์อย่างออกนอกหน้า ส่วนทางด้านแซมเองก็มีแพทย์สาวรุ่นพี่ปี 2 อย่าง ซาร่า [Natascha McElhone] สาวจากอิสราเอลที่แอบปลื้มในตัวของแซมตั้งแต่เจอกันค รั้งแรก ความสัมพันธ์ของแม่และลูกชายที่ไม่ลงรอยเปรียบดังเส้ นขนานที่ไม่มีวันบรรจบกัน หรือความรักที่ถูกทดสอบความซื่อสัตย์และไว้ใจกันจะลง เอยเช่นไร !!!
