แซม [Christian Bale] นักเรียนแพทย์หนุ่มไฟแรงจากฮาวาร์ดผู้คาดหวังกับชีวิ ตที่สมบูรณ์แบบวางแผนแต่งงานกับ อเล็กซ์ [Kate Beckinsale] คู่หมั้นสาวที่คบหาดูใจกันมานานแต่เพราะเหตุผลบางประ การทำให้แซมต้องเดินทางมาฝึกงานที่โรงพยาบาลจิตเวชปร ะจำเมือง Laurel Canyon ลอสแอนเจลิสพร้อมกันกับที่อเล็กซ์ต้องทำวิทยานิพนธ์ร ะดับปริญญาโทที่เธอกำลังศึกษาอยู่และทำให้ทั้งสองต้อ งเดินทางมาพักอาศัยอยู่กับ เจน [Frances McDormand] แม่ของแซมที่เป็นโปรดิวเซอร์หญิงที่ประสบความสำเร็จอ ย่างสูงของวงการเพลงร๊อคแต่เพราะนิสัยรักอิสระเสรีไม ่แคร์สังคมรอบข้างและหลังจากประสบความล้มเหลวในชีวิต ครอบครัวเธอก็ปล่อยเนื้อปล่อยตัวและเปลี่ยนคู่นอนมาก มายหลายคนทำให้เธอมีความสัมพันธ์ที่ไม่ลงรอยกับลูกชา ยอย่างแซมที่รู้สึกอับอายกับนิสัยแม่ตนเองเสมอมา
