เรื่องราวในภาพยนตร์เกิดขึ้นที่สกอตแลนด์ในทศวรรษ 1970 เบส แมคนีล (รับบทโดย วัตสัน) หญิงชาวสกอตเคร่งศาสนาที่แต่งงานกับ ยาน (รับบทโดย สคาร์การ์ด) คนงานแท่นเจาะน้ำมันชาวนอร์เวย์ ที่ประจำอยู่นอกชายฝั่งทะเลเหนือและได้พบกันนานๆ ครั้ง วันหนึ่งยานประสบอุบัติเหตุจนเป็นอัมพาตจนทำให้ไม่สา มารถมีเพศสัมพันธ์กับเธอได้ เขาร้องขอให้เธอไปมีความสัมพันธ์กับชายอื่น และนำประสบการณ์กลับมาเล่าให้เขาฟัง เธอยินยอมตามคำของสามี โดยถือว่าพิธีกรรมดังกล่าวเป็นการล้างบาป โดยเสนอเรือนกายเป็นเครื่องบนบานต่อพระเจ้า เป็นการพิสูจน์ให้พระเจ้ารับรู้ถึงความรักที่เธอมีต่ อยาน และจะทรงปัดเป่าโรคภัยแก่ยานในที่สุด
